Howdy folks, hope everyone is doing well.

This weekend, I come bearing some sad news. Unfortunately, Stephen Wilhite, the inventor of GIFs (Pronounced Jif, btw), has sadly passed away at the age of 74, according to his wife Kathaleen, as sourced by The Verge.

There's a popular saying that goes: "Trends will come and go, but the GIF stays on forever." Okay, maybe it isn't exactly that, but you get my point.

For way beyond our lifetimes, GIFs have been a fun and lightweight medium of sharing emotions across the Internet. Back when they were first introduced by CompuServe in the late 1980s, Internet speeds were slow, to say the least (around 30-50 kbps, in the USA, and probably 0 kbps in India). The concept of sharing high-quality images was a luxury back in the day, and GIFs were the knight in shining armor, promising "High-quality, high-resolution graphics with a small size".

How hilarious is it that it's been more than 40 years since they were first introduced, yet people STILL mispronounce them as GIFs, with a hard G. Even the Oxford English dictionary has recognized both pronunciations as correct, which in turn is incorrect, sigh.

All jokes aside, it is indeed crazy to think that an invention that took all, but the mind of a single human, lived through the quick and rough tides of the Internet, and is now more relevant than ever.

In parts of the world where the Internet speeds are yet to catch up, and even where they have caught up in the past few years, GIFs are being shared like nobody's business. Even around the forums, GIFs have been used regularly to spice up threads and add that extra flair.

As a tribute to a legend of the World Wide Web, you are now invited to share your best GIFs down below. GO crazy with them, scrounge the deepest and darkest corners of your memory, and bring them back to life with that one GIF that cracked you up the best, and share the joy! Have fun folks.

Well, Stephen Wilhite will always be remembered as the inventor of GIFs. But most people, Linguistics, GIPHY, and Basic Common Sense will always disagree with his pronunciation of GIF as 'Jiff'. May his soul rest in peace. 💙

I have to say, there is no best gif I think. The occasion is what makes a GIF.
